The Oxford (MD) Lab, has been operating since the oyster disease MSX first devastated reefs in the the Delaware estuary and moved along the coast. For the past decade, it has been cooperatively operated by both NOAA and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The work of the lab has contributed greatly to the knowledge about diseases of both mollusks and crustaceans. Now a new publication, that puts this knowledge base together, is being distributed. It is an excellent publication and anyone who is involved with disease identification would be advised to obtain a copy of this 218 page volume. The publication covers lab safety, handling of live animals, necropsy and examination of shellfish, with lab skills broken down into readily referenced form. It covers histocytology, as well as diagnostic techniques for blue crabs and miscellaneous ones for mollusks including Juvenile Oyster Disease (JOD), the softshell clam Mya arenaria, and other references. The volume is printed on waterproof paper, making it ideal for lab situations, and is loaded with color plates that combine the work of many of the experts who have been involved with shellfish in our time.
