Extension & Advisory Network: FISH SPAWNING WORKSHOP HELD IN APRIL The next SGES/ADP/MRTC Series Workshop is scheduled for
Saturday, April 22, at the Mariculture Research and Training Center. Participants
will receive hands-on experience in determining egg quality and induced spawning of fish
for food and the ornamental trade. This workshop will provide a comprehensive
introduction to using hormones to induce final maturation and spawning of fish. A
subsequent workshop on hatchery systems and larval rearing methods will be conducted this
summer. The 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. workshop costs $20 and includes pastries, coffee/juice,
bento lunch, supplies and handouts. For more information, contact Rich Bailey
(UHSGES) at (808) 956-2873. Oahu farmers have been hit with a previously unknown
bacterial disease which has caused high mortalities among market-size tilapia. The
disease has been identified in both fresh and saltwater tilapia on farms and in public
waters on Oahu. Dr. Jim Brock (ADP veterinarian) is investigating the outbreak and
is advising farmers not to transfer tilapia between farms until more is known about the
issue. Neighbor Island farms have not been affected. For more information,

session, recently crossed over bills from the chamber they were introduced to the PRODUCTION EXTENSION: The Mariculture Research & Training Center's (MRTC)
library has been upgraded with more aquaculture product brochures, video tapes, and trade
magazines for industry use. The facility is also installing four IBM computers with
word processing and spreadsheet programs. ADP/SGES Aquaculture Specialist Clyde
Tamaru will be working out of MRTC on Tuesdays and Thursdays if you need to reach him.

the most recent aquaculture species to be considered for approval by the Board of
Agriculture in late March for importation permits. At the beginning of 1995, the new

workshop for The Sustainable Aquaculture '95 Symposium will take place on June 15-16, 1995
in Honolulu. Co-sponsored by PACON Hawaii Chapter and the U.S. Department of
Commerce's seafood inspection program, the two-day workshop will prepare companies to meet
the FDA's proposed requirements for a mandatory seafood safety system. If you are

newsgroups dealing with aquarium species and management - alt.aquaria, rec.aquaria and
sci.aquaria. Alt.aquaria is also divided into alt.aquaria.killies for discussion on
killifishes. A lengthy five-part FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) list is issued
monthly. Another source of information is the discussion list AQUA-L
orginating at Prince Edward Island, Canada covering general requests, issues and questions

lastname", leaving the subject line blank to listproc@upei.ca. Asides from AquaNIC -- the main lode of aqua-info, there is

John Bostock has written a short introduction arguing for the use of telecommunication among fish farmers, "An introduction to networking" in the March/April 1995 issue of Fish Farmer (Surrey, UK).
